INGLEWOOD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.y Sept. 23. On Thursday morning about 6 o’clock, a five-roomed house and outbuilding, lately occupied by Mr. F. W. Carrington, was completely destroyed by fire. The house was about half a mile from Inglewood, on Junction Road East. Mr. Carrington and his daughter had gone in. to Inglewood the evening before, and

were induced to stay the night on account of the heavy downpour of rain, so that no one was present when the fire broke out. The building was partly hidden from view by shelter trees, and the fire would not readily be noticed even by the nearest neighbors. Insurances were in the State Of-

fice, £'2oo on the house and £2OO oft the piano and furniture. Absolutely nothing was saved, so Mr. Carrington is a heavy loser, as a number of presentations, portraits, etc., which can never be replaced, have been destroyed. The members of the Inglewood Bowling Club had a very successful gathering, at which there was a splendid attendance, on Thursday night at the Druids’ Hall, to which their lady friends were invited, for the purpose of the meeting was to demonstrate beyond any doubt, the gratitude they felt for the unfailing support the club had always enjoyed at the hands of the ladies. They have cheered them in defeat, steadied them in times of victory, braced their muscles and wanned their hearts with tea and cakes on all occasions. At least that is what the president (Mr. F. .Spurdie) told them. Euchre occupied, the company till 10 p.m. The ladies’ prize, a handsome Doulton jug, fell to Mrs. T. Drake, and

the gentlemen’s, a pipe, to Mr. A .A. Leslie. After cards, supper; after supper, dancing, for which the Wilson family supplied the music till midnight, when all good bowlers pick up the “jack.” The late Mr. Thomas Kelly, whose death was recorded in the News of the 22nd inst., was probably hardly known to the majority of the inhabitants of the district, although as a member of the Taranaki Provincial Council’s executive he was intimately connected with the opening of the Moa block—now Inglewood county —and the start of Inglewood itself as a town district. He was present at thfe banquet held on the bank of the Karapeti stream —now the southern boundary of Inglewood borough— ; When, on January 22, 1875, the formal

site of baptism of Inglewood was performed by the late Mr. Arthur Standish. There are not to-day many survivors of the party then present, or even of persons living in this district, but to those who are still alive the present dwellers here will wish the pleasure of seeing yet more returns of that day and health to enjoy the thoughts of'the years gone by tlyit such anniversaries bring. Amongst these old identities may be mentioned Messrs. G. F. Robinson, R. Stevens, J. J. Stagpoole, F. Earp, Robt. Hill, and P. E. Cheal. Residents of Inglewood and district who are thinking of building should communicate with F. Bond, timber merchant, Inglewood, who notifies =n this issue that he has in stock timber, joinery, and all building requirements; also that plans and estimates of work are prepared. a . . • <. Residents of Inglewood and district are notified that the sale of jewellery at A. Thompson’s will close finally at the end of the month. As all goods have been reduced to practically wholesale price, settlers should make a point of viewing the special bargains.
