NIGHT WORK IN BAKERIES.

MAY BE ABOLISHED. By TotegraiU! Assoclfetlhn. Wellington, September 23. A deputation, representing working bakers and pastrycooks of the Dominion, waited on the Acting-Minister of Labor to-day, asking that the Factories Act be amended to provide for all baking being done between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., this not to apply to the preparatory work of dough-making. They further asked that no baking be done on Sundays, that no bread be sold before 12 hours’ old, arid that the weekly hours under the Factories Act be reduced to 44.

The Minister said the way appeared to be opening up very satisfactorily for the introduction of the reform. If there was no attempt by Labor members to add clauses should an amendment to prohibit night-baking be brought down, there might be a chance of getting the wishes of the deputation in this regard made into law this session. He would have to place the matter before the Cabinet. Mr. Fraser (Wellington Central) eaid he felt he could guarantee that if the proposal were brought, down as a separate amendment Labor would assist it through. The Minister added that the other matter could be considered by the Labor Bills Committee should an amendment to the Factories Act be introduced.
