FIJI BANANAS

A DOOMED INDUSTRY. The recently imposed duty on imported bananas by Australia means a loss to Fiji of some £50,000 a year, says the Auckland Star’s Suva correspondent. The first evidence of the smash of an old and valuable industry was in the decision of the Fiji growers not to ship any more bananas to Australia. This decision left the A.U.S.N. Company no alternative but to take their fine big steamer Levuka off the run to Fiji. On June 28th the Levuka left Suva on her last trip. The steamer was a big favorite. She had been specially built for the trade, with insulated space and all. She and her officers were general favorites in Fiji, so her going was an important event.
