TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Considerable rain has fallen at Wanganui this week, but the tracks are in good order, and provided the present (noon, Wednesday) high winds continue the going should be first-class, though the public may not relish the squally weather likely to be experienced. Fields will be moderate to-day. l>oth numerically and as regards quality, but nevertheless racing should be interesting. Betting in the Durie Hack Handicap (six furlongs) may be principally confined to Awake and Tinihanga, and if the, former draws a good position at the post he should keep his opponents busy for the greater part (if not the whole) of the distance. If anything upsets the favorites it may be Celmisia. There is a lot of unknown quality engagetl in the Maiden (six' furlongs), •hut Still Sea, Believe, and Sleeping Beauty go fairly fast. The Hawk’s six furlongs in 1.15, registered on Monday morning, should send him out first favorite in the Wanganui Guineas, and Tamatete may be best backed of the others. The Okehu Hurdles (one mile and three-quarters) should be a pretty race. Hyginas, Ruddy and Tigritiya can all go fast, but when it comes to racing Explorer may beat more than beat him. Practically nothing but Zola and Tigerland are mentioned in connection with the Hack Steeples (two miles and a half), and the first-named should start favorite. Tatton Park reads ’best of the light-weights, and may fence better than he did at Marton.

A good field will contest the Spring Handicap (eight and a half furlongs), and Listowel, Mustard Pot, Tame Fox and Trespass are likely to have plenty of friends. On Marton form Tame Fox should run best, and if a surprise is in store Kareao may effect it.

They are not a brilliant lot in the Putiki Hack Handicap (eight and a half furlongs), and track ’form points to Malingerer. Halcyon may be the best of the others.

The Flying Handicap (six furlongs), the second “leg” of the double, will take some picking, but Missgokl, Simonides and Rude appear likely to run well. Neither Amythas nor Maioha appear to be ready, and Solfanello, though looking very well, should be benefited by a race.

Nowadays racing clubs have recognised the need for erecting acommodation for trainers and jockeys, and for visiting horses, but the Wanganui Jockey Club is behind the times in this, respect. Horses have given way to the march of the motor-car, and stables have been converted into garages, with the result that accommodation in Wanganui is very difficult to obtain. The writer has heard of more than one trainer who has turned down the Wanganui Jockey Club on this score, and it is up to our friends in the River City to be up and doing before next year’s Cup meeting comes along. Earlier in the week the writer had occasion to refer to the haphazard way in which “correct cards” were compiled, and more in jest than in earnest remarked that some day we might strike such a thing as an “aged filly.” Little did “Moturoa” think that the secretary of a well-known Hunt Club would supply such an absurdity, but there it was in black and white—“ Half Blue, b.f. aged” —not once, but in two places on the one programme! It s quite beside the point (and the writer mentions it with some diffidence) that Half Blue is a gelding! After this it seems hardly worth while pointing out that The liawk and Five Eighths are not “aged,” but are really three-year-olds: nor to waste scorn on such items as “La4v Hlma, b.f. syrs”; “Red Bob, br.c. 4yrs”; and the four-year-old “fillies” ‘Morzonia, Sparc Moments and Hallucination. It is just as well that the committee advertise that while believing the contents of the book to ne correct, they do not hold themselves responsible for any inaccuracy!
