ALLEGED FRAUD.
BOGUS OFFICIAL ON TRIAL. By Telegraph.—Press AsscJahnn. Invercargill, Last Night. At the Orepuki Court yesterday, Maurice J. W. Smith was committed for trial, bail being allowed, on charges of obtaining £5 from each of two farmers by falsely representing that he was an official of the Income Tax Department, and that the law them to purchase a book. The book was entitled “The New Zealand Farmers’ Complete Bookkeeper”, the price of which was £5. Accused was further charged with attempting to obtain money from eight others by means of a similar representation. It was shown that accused has no connection with the department.
