OPUNAKE HOSPITAL

A TENDER ACCEPTED. A tender of £4472 for the Erection of the cottage hospital at Opunake was accepted by the Taranaki Hospital Board yesterday.* The board also had before them a lower tender for £4005 on amended plans and specifications. When the matter was under consideration, Mr. M. O’Brien urged that the board should accept the tender for the original plan, as it provided for a tiled roof, as against iron, and also for thicker walls and other improvements. He had no doubt that the Opunake people would be willing to contribute towards the extra cost. At present they were just completing the canvass for the £6OO which was required by the board, and he was confident the full amount would be readied. Members of the board expressed their appreciation of the efforts of the Opunake people and agreed to fall in with Mr. O’Brien’s suggestion that if a guarantee was given that half the additional cost would be forthcoming they would accept the tender on the original plans and specifications, viz., £4472. Mr. O’Brien replied, thanking the board on behalf of the Opunake people. The successful tenderer, was Mr. F. E. Cooper.
