. LADIES’ TOURNAMENT. A DRAW FOR CHAMPIONSHIP. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Sept. 20. The final of the New Zealand ladies’ hockey championship was played this morning and resulted: Wellington 4, Poverty Bay 4. The heavy rain overnight made the ground sloppy, but a large number of spectators were treated to a splendid exhibition, the excitement frequently rising to fever heat.

An initial solo rush by Miss Hill (Poverty Bay), the star forward of the . tournament, was spoiled by the slipground, but later Hill picked the ball from midfield, and arriving unopposed at the goal, beat the Wellington custodian with a high shot. Soon after Jones centred to Hill, enabling the latter to make the score, Poverty Bay 2, Wellington nil. Wellington assumed the offensive, and a struggle in the circle ended in Wilkins scoring their first goal. Jones relieved the Wellington attack and centred to Hill, who beat all who opposed her—Poverty Bay 3, Wellington 1. A tussle following a 'corner hit awarded to Wellington resulted in Wilkins again finding the net, and before half-time Williams (Wellington) evened the scores with a cut in during a scramble in the Bay circle. On resuming the Bay attacked, and a rapid run gave K. Bilham a good opening, and she found the net, putting the Bay once more in the lead amid tremendous excitement. Williams evened again, and during the rest of the game play traversed rapidly from one circle to another, and the game ended 4 goals each.

Mr. Oram, president of the Manawatu Hockey Association, presented the challenge cup and the Floyd shield to the captains of the teams, which hold each for six months of the year.
