WAGES AND WORK.
WARSHIPS GIVE EMPLOYMENT. ASSISTANCE TO TRADE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. Received Sept. 20, 5.5 p.m. London, Sept. 19. The Daily Express states that the Admiralty is hastening work on four battleships. building in private yards, in order to assist employment during the winter. The Express also states that the railway companies contemplate an immediate substantial reduction on goolfe rates on such
commodities as iron, stone and other raw materials, hoping thus to foster a trade revival. They also contemplate extensive grouping in order to increase the value of passenger traffic, and thus meet existing expenses.
Dr. J. T. Macnamara has been appointed to a committee under the chairmanship of Lord Cave, to recommend reforms in the trade boards which regulate the wages of three million workers. The scheme which serves the rising market is too inelastic for the falling market. Dr. Macnamara says the whole machinery needs overhauling.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assd.
