An American paper says that once one !of the most famous and best paid joc|keys in the United States, Jerry Chorn, i better known in the sporting world as 'Grover Cleveland Fuller, was taken into custody when he was found in a dingy j tittle room smoking opium. The result of the arrest was that his pipe, which !he values at £2OOO, is in strange hands i for the first time for 25 years. The ! pipe was a present, from Chong Pong, ■once a Mayor of San Francisco’s China- ! town, and it was given when Chorn won 'his first race. After his arrest he said I that had he never met the Chinese he might have been a millionaire to-day The following measurements of that great mare, Desert Gold, were recently given in a New Zealand exchange:— Height, 16 hands OAin; girth, 6ft 3in; polf to wither (along crest), 3ft lin; wither to croup, 2ft Biin; croup to root iof tail, Ift 2%in; wither to elbow, 2ft 4in; elbow to coronet, 2ft Ilin; hip to point of hock, 3ft 4in: forearm circumference, Ift 7 in; below knee, Bsin; second thigh, Ift 6in; wither to point of shoulder. 2ft 4in; root of tail circumference, 10in; below hock, 9Jin; forehead width, lOin; bottom of brisket to ground. 2ft lOjin. Sentinel, of the Otago Witness says that in addition to having a battle in store over the Racing Commissions report, Parliament will be asked to consider an amendment to the Gaming Act which provides for legislation of booking on racecourses. It is understood that the proposed amendment to the Gaming Act will provide for an annual licensing fee of £2OO, payable to the Government, Treasury. The bookmakers are to be licensed by the Government, under the supervision of the 'Police Department. A fej will also be paid to the various clubs for the privilege of betting on a racecourse, and it is also proposed that each man licensed by the Government will have to find a guarantee as to his financial position. A good deal of sympathy is beiyg worked up in favor of the scheme, which will, it is claimed, receive more favorable consideration from Parliament than is generally believed.
