WASHINGTON CONFERENCE.
MR. HUGHES’ STATUS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Melbourne, Sept. 17. Lord Northcliffe, in an interview, stated, that he never said Mr. Hughes should go to Washington, as it was incompatible, with the dignity of a Prime Minister to go as an unaccredited. representative, which lie would have to do in view of the United States’ decision that British overseas nations cannot be specially represented. He intended to see that his Press delegation would be representative of overseas opinion, and to that end he had appointed Mr. Franklin Peterson, of the Argus staff, to go to Washington and adv. e the editor of The Times on the position of Australasia. Lord Northcliffe has sailed for Tasmania on a. flying visit.
