Although Donovan’s horses wer.i scratched for the Melbourne Cup yesterday they have not so far been withdrawn from the Randwick Spring meeti jhg engagements, and the belief is that they will not return to New Zealand until after the Randwick meeting. It is pointed out that in the matter of bandages the stewards’ action only places Donovan on a level with all the other trainers. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa”) w Followers of racing will have much to engage their attention during the next fortnight, no less than eight meetings, aggregating thirteen racing days, being set down for decision. The ball will be set rolling to-day by the Manawatu and Pakuranga Hunt Clubs, which race at Feilding and at Ellerslie respectively. On Thursday the Wanganui spring meeting opens; on Friday there will be races at Ashburton; on Saturday at Wanganui, Avondale and Birchwood (Otago); and on Monday week at Avondale and Otaki. The latter meeting concludes on Tues- > day week, and Geraldine finishes up the month with races on Thursday and Friday week. October will be another heavy month, but of that more anon. Acceptances carded for the Pakuranga Hunt meeting are too numerous to allow of racing in safety, aqd the drawfor positions at the barrier’ will make a lot of difference in the Sylvia Park

Handicap, which has attracted 46 horses: and'in the Chatham Handicap, for which 34 have been paid up. Besides which there are 24 in the Jellicoe Handicap, and 23 in the Auckland Handicap. Anyone with a knowledge of racing conditions in Auckland might have expected this contretemps, and unless northern racing clubs are content to limit their programme to six races per day—allowing , divisions if needed in. two events—they ' might have to fall back on the principle of asking nominators to form a queue. ■ and close down after a score or so of acceptances have been recorded. Then we would witness the sad spectacle of >• i string of anxious owners sitting on soap i boxes all night in order to “book neats” for their Gloamings and Desert Golds' It would indeed be a brave (or rash) picker who would take on the formidable task of forecasting winners at Ellerslie to-day. Stork might be the public’s choice in the Auckland Handicap, for the bay son of Hallowmas showed rare, form at’ Marton last week, and is not* meeting anything like Admiral Codrington, Molyneaux, Tame Fox or Starland today.* Sunray also appears to stand out 'on hie own in the Bracelet. The Chatham Handicap will see the runners lined up in two ranks, mid one would have to be sure of their positions before backing either Rational, Income or GolBubble, Koura and Thiganthu may be the most reliable jumpers in the Hunt Cup5 Grand Canyon in the Maiden r-Steeplesj and Oak Rose in the Hunters’ 1 Hurdles, A rattling good dividend appears probable in tjie Sylvia Park Handicap, and those who /set themselves the task of picking the best of the 46 ge- ( fisptws should be medically examined. R would imt surprise good judges to see Prince Martian and Glen Canny taking n hand in the settlemet of the Jellicoe Handicap, Scratchings are likely to be parties larly numerous at the Manawatu Hunt ) to b« held OR the

course to-day, a good number of horses having cracked up on the hard track at Marton last week. Light rains have fallen during the past few days, taking the sting out of the ground. If Tigerland, Kurapai, Whetoki. Te Maire, The Baronet, Verbosity, Malingerer and Lady lllma are produced their recent form should ensure them spirited Gupport, As said before, the New Zealand-Springbok match in Wellington will materially affect the attendance.
