ELTHAM.

THE CRICKET CLUB,

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The annual general meeting of the above was held on Wednesday evening, Mr. G. H. Bennett presiding over a large attendance..

The report was as follows: ‘Tn presenting this report I should like to state that the hopes we had when we started cricket again after the war were realised last season by the Eltham Club winning the South Taranaki cricket shield. Not only this, but we succeeded in having three batsmen top of the averages, and our worthy old warrior, Ernie Cole, top of the bowling averages, which, you will agree, is a very good performance. Although our membership did not increase last season, it was practically our first effort since the game had been revived, and the prospects were never brighter than they are for the approaching season; especially is the interest very keen amongst the junior players, which speaks well for the club. We owe a debt of gratitude to the Eltham Amateur Theatrical Society for their energies. whereby Taumata Park will benefit through the Borough Council providing a horse mower for the coming season. Jn conclusion, I should like to congratulate Messrs. Bain, Cole and Little’ on their splendid performances last season/’

A letter from the South Taranaki Association was read, asking if Eltham could inaugurate a junior competition, and, if the latter club could do so, its delegates were invited to attend a meeting at Hawera on the 15th inst. Members were of opinion that a junior team could be arranged, and Messte. Stewart, Bain and Little were appointed delegates to attend the meeting., .. ; The following officers were elected for the forthcoming season:—President, Mr. 0. J. Hawken. M.P.; vice-presidents, Messrs. G. W. Bennett, J. B. Dunn, J. L. Weir, N. McGarry, C. A. Wilkinson, C. V. Taplen, G. Hayden. E. H. Thomas, T. B. Crump and G. W. Tayler; club captain, Mr. A. A. Stewart; vice-captain, Mr. C. Little; secretary and treasurer, Mr. L. Stratford; committee, Messrs. Bain. Marsh, -Senior, Hemingway, and Grenfell; selection committee, Messrs. A. A. Stewart, K. B. Bain and C. Little; ground committee. Messrs* Grenfell, Little and Marsh.

Messrs. Stewart and Bennett were appointed a committee to wait on the borough council with a view to making a working arrangement for the. upkeep of the wicket.

The following new members were nominated:—Messrs. F. Primmer, C. Holland, Ricketts. Bush, Free, Hemingway. J. Robins, Millar, Hughes, W. Little and J. Falvey (honorary).

The subscription was fixed as follows: —Seniors, £1 Is; juniors under IS years, 10/6; honorary members, ss. The club’s opening day was fixed for the 29th inst., and a match is to be arranged for that day. The two best boys in the local school team are to be allowed free membership to this club, one of the senior teachers being asked to nominate the boys.

Mr. Stewart moved, and Mr. Bennett seconded: “That this club place on record its appreciation of the work Mr. Hemingway (retiring secretary) has done in forming the club, and fostering the game in the district.” This was spoken to by several members, who eulogised Mr. Hemingway for his untiring efforts. —‘Carried by acclamation.
