SOUTHERN MARKETS. FIRM TONE CONTINUES. By Telegraph.—Press Asan Copyright.’ Christchurch, Last Night. The firming of the oat market continues. The. price of 3s 8d f.o.b. South Island has been paid by North Island merchants for A grade Gartin’s yesterday and to-day, and Ss was paid for oats at country stations. The firming reported last week-end has caused farmers to unloose supplies, and offerings have been much freer during the past few days.

Chaff is not being offered to much extent, and quotations are better from £3 5s to £3 7s fid at country stations. A sale of barley is reported at 4s country station. It is understood brewers are well supplied with stocks, some of them having carried over contract-grown barley from last year. Clover and grass seeds are quiet again, with prices maintained. During the past ten days over 15,000 sacks of potatoes have been

shipped north from Timaru and Lyttelton with despatch. Inquiries from the North have slackened off, and in the meantime very little is doing. Quotations are 32s 6d and 37s Cd LONDON WOOL GALES. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., Stratford, have received the following cable from their London Office : "Fifteenth wool sales closed firmly compared with rates realised at close preceding sales. Prices were higher from 10 to 15 per cent., with exception of coarse scoured and throats, which are about 5 per cent, higher.” LONDON MARKETS. BUTTDR AND CHEESE PRICES. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., have received the following cablegram from their London house under date 14th instant: — Tallow.—We quote present spot values for the following descriptions: Fine mutton, £2 19s 6d per cwt.; good beef, £2 18s per cwt.; mixed £2 Ils per cwt. Fairly good demand. Frozen Mutton. —5%d to 7 7-8 d per lb. Frozen Lamb.—ls o%d per lb. Frozen Beef. —'Hindquarters 5%d per lb., forequarters B%d per lb. Market dull, with downward tendency. New Zealand Butter.— £ll 4s per cwt. .Market dull. Cheese.—£s 4s per cwt. to £5 8s per cwt. Market slow.
