LOWER BUTTER PRICES.
REDUCTION OF ONE PENNY
EFFECT OF LONDON
A drop of one penny in the retail price of butter took effect in New Plymouth from yesterday. The prices now ruling are 2/4 (pats) and 2/3 (bulk). Local retailers received advice during tha morning oi the decline in price, and the concession was passed on to the public, the new prices operating straight away. The fall was anticipated in view of the decision of the Auckland Butter Committee earlier in the week, when they made a similar decrease.
It has been pointed out that the prices ruling at Home are for Government stored butter, and do not represent the true value of the present season’s make. It was confidently anticipated that when the butter now being manufactured reached the London market in November, a satisfactory price would be realised. Evidently the Home authorities are anxious to quit all stored butter before the new make from Australia and New Zealand came into competition, and in the opinion of the producer® the fluctuations which were now taking place were by no means a true index of present New Zealand values.
