Doust and Macartney qualified in the fourth round of the men’s doubles at the South of England tennis championship tournament at Eastbourne. AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. Received Sept. 14, 8-30 p.m. New York, Sept. 13. A Philadelphia telegram states that Anderson defeated Hawkes in the third round, 10—8, 6—o, 6—3. Matches set down for Monday were postponed on account of the rain. HAWERA CLUB. The annual general meeting of the Hawera Tennis and Croquet Club was held on Monday afternoon, Mr. H. D. Caplen (president) in the chair and about 22 members being present. The report stated: Fourteen tennis matches were played with all the neighboring clubs and New Plymouth, and only those against New Plymouth and Waverley were lost, while the combined Hawera teams were again easily defeated by Wanganui. Mrs Smith was selected for the Taranaki team v. Auckland, and secured, with Miss Whittington, the ladies’ handicap doubles at the Tnranaki tournament, while Mr. R. H. Leece, with his partner, secured the handicap doubles at the Wanganui tournament. The club tennis tournaments were won by the following: Ladies championship. Mrs. Smith, with Miss Burgess as run-ner-up; ladies’ handicap singles, Mrs. Smith, with Mrs. Collins as runner-up; ladies handicap doubles, Mrs. Hawk and Miss D- Blake; men’s championship singles, Mr. Whitelaw, with Mr. F. G. Foden as runner-up; men’s handicap singles, Mr. H. Wills, with Mr. Whitelaw as runner-up. In the croquet, Mrs. Jarvie upheld the honor of the club by annexing the Wellington Provincial Championship, and was runner-up in the open championship at ihe same meeting. There was no club championship last year.

The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. Leece; vice-presidents, Mr. Douglas and Mrs. Morris; secretary, Mr. N. Caplen; treasurer, Mr. H. G. Brodie: committee, Messrs. H. D. Caplen and Collins. Mesdames Brodie and Bennett, Dr. Young; auditor, Mr. D. L. Smith; delegate, Mr. N. Balharry; ground committee, Messrs. Leece and N. Caplen; match committee, Messrs. E. G. Foden and Whitelaw; tea committee, Mesdames Callaghan, J. E. Campbell, Wyllie, Smith, Misses P. Young, and Burgess.
