BRITAIN’S UNEMPLOYED.
PLANS TO PROVIDE WORK. . LARGE ROAD SCHEME. By Telegraph.— Prest Aon.- Copyright. Received Sept. 14, 5.5 p.m. London, Sept. 13. The Cabinet committee upon unemployment had a long conference. They considered the Labor Exchange’s report that 1,527,000 were wholly unemployed, and about 400,000 were working short time. A total of 290,000 have exhausted their unemployment benefits; being out of work more than 22 weeks, but will be entitled to a further sixteen weeks from November 2. Cabinet decided that there must be no extension of individual doles, which was the worst means of relieving unemployment. The committee recommend assistance to local authorities out of the Treasury, and it is understood they contemplate thus spending £10,000,000. The committee discussed a large road scheme as a means of relieving the situation.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
