ELTHAM.

BOWLING CLUB. (From Our Own Correspondent.) September 13. The annual meeting of the Eltham Bowling Club was held on Monday evening, when there was a large attendance. The following report was presented: Last year the club was fortunate in enrolling several new members, all of whom showed great promise of - becoming good players. This to a great extent was the cause of such a successful season, and if the same keenness and enthusiasm is maintained this year and more members secured, the chib can look forward to becoming the leading sports elub in the town. The entries for the various competitions were a record for the club. All were keenly contested and resulted in the Rev. J. G. Castle winning the championship singles, Mr. J. R. M. Stewart the handicap singles, and Messrs. Cumming and Stewart (s.) the handicap pairs. In the centre “banner” competition the club won more games than ever before, and were run-ners-up to Hawera. This result is all the more gratifying when it is remembered that our competing rinks were composed largely of new players. The finances of the elub for some time past have not been satisfactory, but last year was the turning of the tide. While the balance-sheet docs not show any appreciable difference it must be remembered that the liabilities have been reduced and the green and grounds considerably improved. The expenses this season will not be heavy. The club has to thank Mr. Carman for the manner in which he -carried out the duties of ground superintendent with the ffinds available, and Mr. Morgan, custodian, for keeping the green in good order throughout the season. The thanks of the club are also due to the ladies for their kindness in providing afternoon teas and attending to the comforts of the visitors. A very successful concert was held in December, which benefited the club to the extent of £36 Ils lid. Thanks are due to all those who contributed to make the function the success it was. Mr. Holder, the secretary, is deserving of special mention fpr his untiring efforts to see that everything went off smoothly. The prospects for the coming season are very promising. An earnest effort will be made to double the membership. With the hearty cooperation of all the members this can be done, and if every member will make an effort to enrol at least one member and assist him in getting the utmost enjoyment out of the game we will find that the club at the end of the season will be in a flourishing condition, every member thoroughly enjoying himself in the hearty goodfellowship pervading the club.

The following new members were elected: Dr. Boyd. Messrs. Cuff, Ward, C. Pennington, Manley, Reilly, Baker, Rowe. Topliss, Donnelly, Bosley, Bltfett and Bridger.

The election of officers resulted: PresiIdent. Rev. J. G. Castle; vice-president, I Mr. E. Bary; secretary and treasurer, [Mr. A. Holder; committee, Messrs. IT. A. I Judd, T. Stauners. C. R. K. Cumming, iD. L. Astbury; selection committee, Messrs. Castle. E. Carter and 11. G. Carlman; ground superintendent, Mr. H. G. !Carman; auditor. Mr. JI. G. Carman; centre delegate. Mr. E. Bary. A working bee volunteered to paint the pavilion, and for this purpose Mr. Smalley kindly donated five gallons of oil. To review the general workings of the club it was decided to hold a general meeting in May. Later it was decided to hold the annual meeting in September. 1922. After much discussion on the possibilities of*placing the ground adjoining the green into play, the meeting concluded with n hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Holder for the able manner in which he had carried out the duties of secretary during the year. HOOKEY CLUB DANCE. A very successful dance was held in the Town Hall on Monday evening, when there was a good attendance. Music was supplied by McCarthy’s orchestra, and the duties of M.C.’s were carried out by several of the men’s hockey team. A very pleasant time was spent by all present, and the secretaries (Misses I Richards and Mr. D. Miller) are to be congratulated on the success of the evening. MUSIC EXAMINATIONS.
