Orders for papers may also be left with them. BOROUGH COUNCIL. September 13. The monthly meeting of the General Purposes Committee of the Stratford Borough Council was held last night. Present: Crs. C. Jackson (Deputy Mayor), R. H. Cameron, S. Ward, W. Mclnnes, Lawson, S. B. Hunter, C. Walsh, E. S. Rutherford and A. Stewart. MONTHLY REPORTS. The librarian (Miss Laverty) reported that the number of books issued during the past month was 1902. Eighteen new books were added, and four new subscribers enrolled, bringing the total to 201. The abattoir manager (Mr. Kinnear RossKreported that the following stock had been slaughtered during the month: 63 cows, 18 heifers, 72 oxen, 458 sheep, 13 pigs. There was a record number of sheep slaughtered, and another record was the total fees—£7B Is 6d. Work was going on in a satisfactory manner. CORRESPONDENCE.
The Minister of Justice (Hon. E. P. Lee) wrote that it was not possible to secure an additional constable for Stratford at present, but arrangements were being made for the training of a larger number of recruits, so that all reasonable demands for additional constables could be met ae early as possible.—Received. In reply to the council’s protest against the increase in the charges for audit inspection, the Assistant Under-Secretary replied that the scale of fees had been fixed in 1888, since when there had been a considerable increase in all expenses, and an increase had to be made to meet the loss. —Received.
The Stratford Hockey Club £sked for a rebate on the rent of the Town Hall for two dances held there recently—The request was refused. The Taranaki Provincial Scottish Society applied for a concession in the rent of the Town Hall for the concert and dance, the whole of the nett profits of which were < to go to the Stratford fallen soldiers’ me'morial.—lt was agreed to remit the whole of the rent of the hall and furnishings. It was resolved? on the motion* of Cr. Lawson, to forward a letter of sympathy to the widow of the late Mr. Frank Arcien, who was at one time a member of the council. The resignation of Mr. C. J. Wood, of the council’s clerical staff, was received with regret. HOSPITAL BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Hospital Board was held this morning. Present: Messrs. C. D. Sole (chairman), P. Thompson, J. T. Belcher, R. McK. Morison, J. O’Neill, E. Marfell, and G. P. Harkness. The acting medical superintendent (Dr. Sowcrby) reported that-during the month 25 patients were admitted and 28 discharged, leaving 21 patients in hospital. Eight operations were performed, and there were eleven out-patient attendances. There were five cases in isolation. The alterations to the isolation wards have been completed, 0 and the task of isolating different diseases is lightened.
The matron (Miss S. G. Beedle) reported that Nurse Waite had been successful in the operating examination held last month.
The district nurse at Whangamomona (Nurse Myers) reported that during July 8 medical and 10 surgical cases had been dealt with. One midwifery case was visited, and an accident case had been accommodated for one night in the district room.
Hie application of the Whangamomona Medical Association for a bed and mattress for the resident nurse was acceded to.
It was decided, on the motion of the chairman, to strongly support the resolution passed by the North Canterbury Hospital Board urging that venereal diseases be made compulsorily notifiable diseases. The resignation of Mr. R. McK. Morison was accepted with regret, members of the board expressing their appreciation of the fine work which Mr. Morison has done whilst on the board, and wishing him every happiness and good fortune in his new home in Auckland. Mr. Morison briefly responded to the good wishes expressed.
FLOWER SHOW. The annual flower show of the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church was held today in the Sunday school room, and the Ladies’ Guild, who were in charge of the arrangements, are to be congratulated on the success of their endeavors. There were some very fine blooms of many varieties on exhibit, and a large number.of people visited the show during the day. " A “mock court” is being held this evening, and the church fund should benefit to an appreciable extent by the takings. The following are the prize-winners: Daffodils.—Mrs. Riera 1. The Stratford Fire Brigade annual ball will take place in the Town Hall on Thursday evening, and promises to be a very successful function. Music will be provided by Mrs. Bianchi's orchestra. Any ladies who will help to prepare the supper would be welcomed at the Town Hall on Thursday afternoon. The ball has always been a thoroughly enjoyable fixture, and this year’s function promises to be quite up to the usual standard.
