SOLDIERS’ GRAVES.

EXHUMATION QUESTION. AN APPEAL PROBABLE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Sept. 12. It is authoritatively stated that the War Office has decided to discontinue exhumation from graves on the French and Flemish battlefields on September 30. Neither Australia, New Zealand, nor Canada were parties in this decision. The matter is entirely ■within the discretion of the Imperial authorities. It is estimated that 25,000 bodies are unrecovercd in France and Flanders, including 11,000 Australians. The exhumation would probably take years, while identification is increasingly difficult each year.

It is understood that Mr. Hughes and the Commonwealth military authorities are anxious to continue the exhumation, but it is impossible without Imperial cooperation. It is believed that if the Dominions jointly appeal to the Imperial authorities the latter may be induced to continue the exhumations for at least another J’ear.
