TIMARU MURDER.
PROVISION FOR THE WIDOW. HELP FROM THE PUBLIC. Telegraph.—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. The Hon. E. P. Lee (Minister of Justice) was interviewed to-day by Mr. Craigie, M.P. for Timaru, in connection with the murder of Constable Dorgan. Mr. Craigie informed the Minister that public subscriptions were being raised for the widow and children, and asked that the Government should subsidise the total received. The Minister informed Mr. Craigie that definite provision had been made by a pension to the widow and children. These cases received the same pension as for the widow of a deceased soldier—namely, £2 a week for the widow, and 10s for each child under fourteen. In this case the total would be £3 10s weekly. Mr. Lee said he had brought Mr. Craigie’s request before Cabinet on Saturday, when it was decided to supplement the fund to the extent of £250, the Minister to be satisfied as to the appropriation of the fund. Mr. Lee suggested to Mr. Craigie the advisability of vesting the fund in the Public Trustee, the widow to receive the annual proceeds, and on her death it would go to the surviving children. The Government recognised the plucky action of the constable in carrying out his duty and exceedingly regretted that he lost his life in doing so. Constable Dorgan was recognisde as a very energetic and capable officer, and the sympathy of the Government was extended to the widow and children in their sad loss.
