EVEREST EXPEDITION.
INTERESTING EXPLORATIONS. EAST SIDE UNSCALABLE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright London, Sept. 10. Reports from the Everest expedition, dated Kharta, August 17, show that much interesting exploration work has been done in the eastern valleys. Seeking an approach to Everest itself, one party climbed to the summit of Langmals, 18,000 feet, and also explored the epur opposite Everest, 19,400 feet, obtaining glorious panoramic views of vast cliffs, gorges and glaciers. The expedition has met with much flower-decked and grassy country on the slopes, and experience has decided the leaders that it is impossible to ascend Everest from the east. They are now exploring the valleys round Makalau and the Kharta-tsing-po Valley t which is clothed with the most luxuriant vegetation. A feature of the district is the number of lakes, whereas lakes are very rare in the Himalayas.
