RAILWAYMEN’S HOURS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Capetown, Sept. 8. The Government has announced that ft has been decided to discontinue the eight-hour day on the railway service. Experience has proved that the cost of Working on this basis is prohibitive. Drivers and firemen revert to the ninehour day, ticket examiners and guards to ten hours, and other grades according to the nature of the work. Where this is sufficiently exacting the hours Will be 48 weekly. The Government recognises that the change will be unpopular, but is satisfied that it is unavoidable. It hopes the staff will realise the Seriousness of the financial position. The Labor Party won two by-elec-<ions at the expense of the South African Party, both Ministerial seats Which were vacant owing to election irregularities.—Reuter.
