Cable Assn. GOVERNMENT ADOPTS PIECEWORK. Received September 7, 8.40 p.m. Adelaide, Sept. 7. The Government has decided to adopt piecework as far as possible in the Government departments, and fix its own rates of pay, instead of referring to the Wages Board. This decision has aroused widespread Labor opposition.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. EXHUMATION OF DEAD SOLDIERS. Received September 7, 7.20 p.m. Melbourne, Sept. 7. In connection with the recent cable announcing that the exhumation of Australian dead on the French and Belgian battlefields is ceasing, Mr. Pearce has announced that arrangements have been made with the Imperial Graves Commission to continue the work. The Australian section now engaged will be disbanded, excepting a few identifying officers.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. EXPEDITING MAILS. Received September 7, 7.20 p.m. Melbourne, Sept. 7. Arrangements have been made between the Federal Government and the Westralian railway authorities for an alteration of the timetable on the transcontinental railway, whereby the time for the conveyance of overseas mails from Fremantle to the eastern States will be reduced by two days.
