CORRESPONDENCE.
■■■ A WONDERFUL RECORD. (To the Editor) Sir, —It would be interesting to know how many ratepayers realise the wonderful record our'most recently elected Borough Council is putting up. Their last meeting enabled them in an hour or so to: (1) Turn down the proposal for a survey for hydro-electric extension, though such extension might mean the establishment in New Plymouth of an industry that would make the town perhaps the most important industrial centre in the Dominion. (2) Refused point blank to even consider an extension of the tramway to Wallace Place from Morley. Street, even though such would make an unprofitable line a very paying one. (3) Refused to find a substitute for the Westown ’bus, although having once established such service it would seem up to the council to continue it without interruption. Westown ratepayers will not find the Mayor’s gibe about “learning to walk” comforting. (4) Turned down its own engineer by deciding to call in a contractor to report upon the engineer’s proposals in regard to the present dam. On top of thia the council must have given the general manager permission to seek an appointment elsewhere in spite of the fact that he is under a binding agreement with the council. Quietly, is it a hint to both manager and engineer that our council can do without experts —with the aid of contractors! Anyway it wasn’t a bad evening’s record, but where do the ratepayers come in? —I am, etc. I RATEPAYER.
