HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL.

WORK OF THE MONTH. MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Hawera County Council was held on Saturday. Present: Crs. Murdoch (chairman), Douglas, C. Hawken, Dunlop, Larcon, Lysaght, Linn and Washer. A letter was received from the Eltham County Council asking if the Hawera County Council would agree to the merging of Buckman’s property, an area of 990 acres in the E'ltham County. It appeared that Buckman used the Eltham County roads exclusively, and had no means of access to the property, except through the Eltham County, and the property should logically belong to Eltham.

The chairman stated that the property had been offered to both Eltham and Patea Counties, and had been declined. If the property were given to Eltham, it would mean that they would always be chopping and changing. —The letter was received. An application for a renewal of a slaughterhouse license from T. H. Walker and Son was granted. v

A letter was received from the Paritutu Preservation League asking for assistance in taking united % action to open up Mt. Egmont quarry, and also stopping more damage being done to Paritutu.

The chairman said that members of Parliament were going to bring the matter of Mt. Egmont quarry before Parliament at the next session, and they could do no more.—The letter was received.

A letter was received from the Hawera Dairy Company asking that in order that the trials and tribulations of some of the suppliers might be relieved, the council would metal that portion of the Fraser Road which adjoined the Eltham County.

The chairman said there was about thirty chains of road unmetalled, and it would cost up to £6OO or £7OO to do the work.

It was decided, on the motion of Cr. Douglas, to reply advising the ratepayers to raise a special loan to carry out the Work.

A request was received from twonty-threp ratepayers at Tawhlti, asking that the lighting should be extended by placing a light at the corner of Glasgow Street and Tawhitl Road.—The matter was left over until the next meeting.

The matter of work to the Lysaght Road was discussed, The chairman said that the trustees of the Lysaght estate l ad in 1910 decided to dedicate the Lysaght Road to the County Council, but since that time the matter had been allowed to drop and had been forgotten. The council had not promised to do anything to the road. Mr. Nairn waited on the council ns a deputation from settlers at Whcnuakura. The settlers had td pay rates to Hawera and tr.i' elled on the Eltl am County roads. Late! Eltham had taken over part of the road, av i as the settlers paid no rates, had refused to keep the road open for them. The settlers were thus land locked. The cost of keeping the road in order was not very much. The settlers were doing the work themselves at present in order to get-in and out. The best way would bo to make some arrangements with tbe settlers t.o look after the road The settlers paid about £l2O per year in rates. The chairman said he thought that it would be a good suggestion to make arrangements with Mr. Kelly, one of the settlers, to look after the road. He moved that this should be done.—Carried. FOREMAN’S REPORT. The foreman's repott was as follows: Tawhiti Road- The metalling of this road is now finished, and the banking up of the metal is being proceeded with. The culvert al the foot of the hill is very narrow for the present day traffic, being only 16 feet in the centre of filling, with a bad curve. With 12 feet added on to the present culvert It would make tbe road fairly straight in that particular spot, and the cost would be £l2O. Munga Munga Bridge.—This bridge has been strengtl ened and lifted about two feet, so that the surface water cannot run on to it. Th<ve are a few stringers to go into it as soon as they come to hand. * Ahlpaipa Road.—The metalling of tbe twen-ty-five chains of this road will be finished during the next few days, and the roller will go out ne' - week to finish it off. Norfolk Road Stone—There has been procured about 2300 yards of stone from thia source now the Tawhiti Road is finished, and owing to the unsatisfactory way it comes to hand the contract will terminate as soon as the stones that are out of the river arc forwarded. The two-ton lorry has been carting metal from Lander's pit on to the Otoki Road, refacing a portion of the hill above Mr. Barkla's property. The report was adopted. It was decided that the work of adding to the cul.ert at Tawhiti Road be done.
