j SLAUGHTERMEN’S STRIKE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Sept. 3. Though the slaughtermen’s dispute was apparently settled by the Conciliation Commissioner, the butchers employed at the city abattoirs have not returned to work. The Mayor states that the slaughtering of beef under the contract system will be coigmenced next week.
LORD NORTHCLIFFE’S MESSAGE. ■Wellington, Sept. 3. The following telegram has been received by the aeting-Prime Minister from Lord Northcliffe: —“Before leaving New Zealand after a visit, during which I have met people from both islands, and have gained much information, I desire to thank you for the many courtesies 1 have received. This sunny Britain away from Britain is best known to us by the fine deeds of its soldiers. It has many material advantages which should be equally known. I have made arrangements for an improved news service to London to my newspaper?, and shall be glad at any time to call attention at Home to many matters affecting the welfare, of the Dominion.” Sir Francis Bell has sent the following reply: —“I thank you for your appreciative message. The Government is glad you have enjoyed your visit to New Zealand, and hopes to welcome you here again. Your intimation that you have arranged for improved news services to your London papers will be gratifying to the public here. Kia Ora!”
RACING COMMISSION’S REPORT. Auckland, Sept. 3. At a meeting of the Auckland Provincial Country Club the following resolutions were carried:—“This meeting is of opinion that the report of the Racing Commission does justice to the racing community, and being calculated to improve the conditions of racing, its application will be 'in the best interest of the Dominion, and that the Minister of Internal Affairs be informed of this opinion; that the association recommend all affiliated clubs to send delegates to Wellington to watch the interets of their respective clubs when the report is before Parliament.”
