ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) A very enjoyable social evening /as held at the C.E.M.S. Club on Friday, the club rooms being filled to their utmost. The president (Mr. T. Stauners), welcomed the visitors, especially Mr. W. Thorpe, vice-president, who lias just returned front a holiday trip to the Motherland. Several musical items were rendered during the evening, all meeting with very hearty applause. Foord’s orchestra opened ,-the proceedings, the following contributing: Song, Mr. O’Neil; song, Mrs. Drayton; duet, Misses Gernhoeffer; duet, Mr. and Mrs. Marsh; recitation, Mrs. Anderson (encored); song, Mr. Johnson; musical item, Foord’s orchestra; “Amazing Stories,” Rev. Castle; song. Miss Boon; song, Mr. W. Thorpe; trio, Mr. and Mrs. Marsh and another; song, Mrs. Drayton. Mr. Thorpe gave an interesting account of his travels through Canadfi, the United States and England. He stated that he arrived in England at the end of the coal strike, and found that country in a particularly bad state. 'frade unionism, he said, was crippling her. In one instance America was turning out motor cars 100 per cent, cheaper than England could. The soft goods trade was also in a state of chaos, in many instances the larger firms being in precarious financial difficulties. He said he was glad to be back in "God’s thvn Country,” where things were flourishing in comparison with other lands. PERSONAL. Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Wylds returned from a holiday trip to Australia on Thursday. Messrs. R. Masters. S. G. Smith and E. Dixon, M.P.’s, were in Eltham on Friday. Mr. J. Falvey had the misfortune *o break a rib when playing in the “Old Timers’ ’’ football match on Thursday. Messrs. C. Taplin and Gower also received minor injuries in the same match
