Government proposals regarding the reduction of railway expenditure by short time and the abolition of the eight-hour day are arousing strong opposition. Several meetings of railwaymen pledged themselves to oppose the proposals by all the means in their power. The last of the Imperial troops will-leave South Africa in December. The Imperial property has been transferred to the Union Government, including forts, cantonments and farms, valued at over two millions, for less than one-tenth of that sum.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
