WHAT THE CENSUS SHOWS. TARANAKI FIGURES. A first instalment of the housing figures collected during the census is given in the August Abstract of Statistics issued the other day. The figures show a total of 268,059 inhabited dwellings in the Dominion, as against 243,086 at the census of October, 1916. Included in those figures are 7138 flats and tenements at this census, as against 8643 in 1916. In the explanatory matter accompanying the figures it is stated that the terms “dwelling” and “house” adopted should not be confused: the former term covers private houses, flats, hotels, hospitals, tents, etc., while the latter refers only to private houses. The Dominion totals at the two censuses compare as under, not distinguishing the various kinds of uninhabited houses and bearing in mind that in the total of occupied, dwelligs each flat or tenement counts as one dwelling: 1916. 1921.
