RETAIL PRICES.

A DECREASE RECORDED. In an introductory note to the latest Abstract of Statistics, the Government Statistician says: The index number for the three food groups as at July 15 (Dominion weighted average) is 1752, a decrease of 20 points as compared with the preceding month’s figure (1772), and an increase of 63.74 per cent, as compared with that for July, 1914. Almost all the items in the groceries group have contributed towards the decrease of 20 points in the index number for the group, as compared with the previous month’s figure, the decline being most general and pronounced in potatoes and tobacco. The decrease of 70 points in the index number for dairy produce is largely due to an average fall of approximately 9d per dozen in the price of eggs. A general rise in the price of meat has caused a further increase of 12 points in that group over the previous month’s index number.

Of countries for which statistics of retail prices of food are available New Zealand ranks fourth lowest as regards percentage increase since July, 1914.
