REVOLT IN INDIA.
A LEADER SURRENDERS. THE WORST OVER. AN ECONOMIC LOSS. ‘ . T. • By Telegraph.—Frees Assn.—Copyright. Received September 3, 1.10 a.m. Delhi, September 2. All Mohalier, a prominent rebel leader, has surrendered with a large following. It is believed this will break the back of the rebellion. No more heavy fighting has been reported, and the Moplahs at Tirurangadi have mainly surrendered.
The economic effects of the rebellion are beginning. It is anticipated that both harvests will be a total failure. The Governor of Madras uttered a grave warning that the Government is apprehensive of the effects in other districts. He declined to allow a discussion on the police action in firing on a crowd in Madras city on August 29. Details received show that the fight at Tirurangadi lasted several hours. The rebels resisted desperately, a large force beating drums and shouting the war cry from within a mosque, where they had taken refuge. The rebels used a kind of rocket carrying a sharp spike of explosive materials. —Reuter Service.
