BRITISH HELICOPTER.
PERILOUS TRIAL FLIGHT. AN INCALCULABLE MACHINE. London, August 20. Described as “the man with magic hands,” Mr. Frank Courtney, the winner of the aerial Derby of 1920, has been chosen as pilot for the trials of the secretly-built helicopter, which are taking place this week at Farnborough. The choice is generally approved. No airman has faced greater adventures. He was for some time engaged in making trial flights with large air express machines. He has wonderfully sensitive hands, comparable to Hawker’s. Skill, experience and daring are necessary for the experiments, since the helicopter is an utter mystery, and it is impossible to tell how it will behave when the direction of its fight is changed. If Courtney is successful he will inaugurate a completely fresh phase of the development of flight, and his achievement will be comparable to that of the Wright brothers’ first flight, or to Pegoud’s first loop.
