VIRGINIAN MINERS.
FIRING CONTINUED.
By Talegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright New York, August 31. A Charlestown message states that, despite the proclamation by President Harding asking the armed miners to disperse before September 1, otherwise there will be Federal intervention, armed bands or miners and the sheriff’s posse of civilians continued desultory firing. Many were wounded, but the number has not been determined. One deputy sheriff was killed. The miners continue to mobilise in the vicinity of Logan. It is reported that 100 Ohio miners have joined the West Virginians. The appeal of the miners’ officials is powerless to avert a serious conflict. The local chiefs and , national heads called upon the men to i return to their homes. Considerable numbers returned to Charlestown giving I evidence of their spirit by aimless firing in the city, and later returned to Logan.
The State Government appears powerless, and the sheriff’s posse, while large, is still telegraphing the Governor for reinforcements.
