Mrs. Wilkes, of New Plymouth, gained first place in the mezzo-soprano contest at the Wellington competitions out of twenty-four competitors. At St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Christchurch, on Wednesday, Mr. Justice Herdman was married to Mrs. Alice Elizabeth Brown, of Aikman’s Road. Merivale, Christchurch, the Rev. John Paterson officiating. Mr. Justice Herdman left yesterday for the West Coast to take the Supreme Court sittings there.—Press Association.
Mr. A. D. Dobson’s resignation as city engineer and city surveyor in Christchurch, will take effect as from August 31. The City Council has granted Mr. Dobson six months’ leave of absence on full pay, and it is intended to present him with a framed illuminated testimonial on his retirement.
General regret was expressed at the annual meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club at the imminent departure of Mr. J. Goring Johnston for England, and his consequent relinquishing of his racing interests in the Dominion. The chairman (Mr. .1. H. P. Strang) voiced the sentiments of the cjpb when he said that the turf could ill afford to lose a patron of Mr. Johnston’s stamp, and expressed the hope of his return at nd very distant date. Captain C. E. W. Fleming, superintendent of marine, Auckland, received notification this week of his retirement from the service on superannuation. Captain Fleming has occupied his present post in Auckland for the pa*t 16 years, during which time he has earned the esteem of all connected with local shipping circles. He served his apprenticeship in the sailing vessels of th» Lyle Company. Air. James Herbert Barr, accountant and inspector of the Prisons Depart nlent, died on Tuesday night at Wellington. The deceased, a son of Mr. W. R Barr, was born at Wellington on July 20, 1883, and joined the public servic* in August, 1899, being attached to the Official Assignee’s office, in AVellington, He transferred to the Tourist Department in 1903, and was stationed nt Rotorua from August 1 of that year till November, 1905, when he joined the head office of the department at Wellington. He was accountant at the head office of the Tourist Department until last June, when he was appointed accountant and inspector to the Prisons Department. The late Mr. Barr was a brother of Mr. John Barr, a well-known Sydney Pressman, formerly of Wellington, and another brother is Mr. William Barr, chief inspector of the Public Trust Office.
