WHY WORK?
PAYS TO BE UNEMPLOYED. CURIOUS POSITION IN LONDON. By Telegraph —Press Assn —Copyright. Received August 30, 10.30 p.m. London, August 30. Unless the writs issued be suspended thirty Poplar councillors will go to prison ! on September 1 for refusing to levy rates, which will total £300,000 by Christmas. I The councillors’ case is that unemployment relief is costing the borough nearly £6OOO weekly, and that unemployment is due to national and international causes. Therefore the wealthy boroughs should contribute towards the burdens of the poorer areas. The councillors are confident that their imprisonment will be immediately followed by a no-rent strike. Meanwhile the Camberwell and Islington guardians are paying unemployed relief amounting to £3 13s 6d weekly to married men with six children. Bermondsey is ! paying £4 ss. Hackney unemployeds with six children are claiming £4 Us, and similar applicants in Shoreditch demand £4 13s. These payments are frequently higher than the workers’ wages, raising the query, “Why work?”—Reuter Service.
