AUSTRALIA. Second Innings, Cfitlins, c H. Ashton, b Gibson 12 Bardsley, not out 8 Carter, not out ........ M .^............. 4 Extras 1 Total (for one wicket) 25 The game was resumed in glorious weather. The wicket was in excellent condition and tiio attendance large. Playing an uphill game, the Englislxmen gave a much bettor account of themselves, chiefly as the result of brilliant play by Faulkner and Hubert Ashton, who contributed 228 out of -a total' of 326. McDonald again carried off the bowling honors.
A bad start was made. Maclaren succumbed to' McDonald's first ball and* Foster drove one back to the same bowler, making the score three wickets for 33.
Gilbert and Hubert Ashton then became associated. Both began briskly, Gilbert getting some fine crisp square-log hits off McDonald. The half-century took 46 minute to appear, and shortly afterwards Gilbert got his leg in front of Armstrong, who had displaced Gregory.—Four for 60. With Faulkner in tte scoring stowed down. Ryder relieved McDonald at 68, and Mftiley came on for Armstrong at 86. Faulkner then opened out, and several times sent Mailey to the boundary, the century coming up fn 80 iruinutes. A remarK- • ble feature of the tour has been how often straight drives off the Australian bowling have hit the opposite wicket. This happened throe times within an hour to-day.
Batting was now spirited, despite safe and attractive fielding. Further bowling changes were made, but 50 was hit in 40 minutes. Malley and .McDonald bowled after luncheon. The. latter was at hla fastest and kept.down the runs. At J 55 Gregory relieved McDonald. The partnership produced a century in 93 minutes. The batting was again very lively, with brilliant driving and glancing. Armstrong took the ball from Gregory at 192, and the change, was fatal to Hubert Ashton, who shared hLs brother’s fate. He had been in 150 minutes.—Five for 214. Faulkner was 73 when he lost Ashton. As he approached the century he was inclined to bo rash, but batted safely again after the, tea adjournment. He completed the century' in 150 minutes. Meantime Chapman and C 1 Ashtou were disposed of, but, with Falcon in, 3G was added in twenty •minutes, including a six by Faulkner off Mailey. Tire partnership produced 50 l>efore McDonald dissolved it.— Eight for 307.
Armstrong rang on various changes, but Faulkner engineered to get most of the bowling and banged his hardest, and finally drove a hot one back, which hit Armstrong. He
reached 150 in 210 minutes, and ended by hitting Armstrong into Malley’s hands at deep square leg.—Nine for 326. Faulkner played a chanceless, beautiful innings, and hit a sixer and 20 fours.
