MAIN ROADS BILL.

IMPORTANCE TO TARANAKI.

MEETING OF LOCAL BODIES. The Government’s proposals for the control of main roads were touched on at the meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council last night. The Kaiapoi Borough Council submitted a resolution on the question, pointing out the Bill proposed “levying taxes on tyres and motor owners, both boroughs and cities being expected to stil! maintain the portions of the main road in their respective areas, which is considered unjust and unfair.” The resolution drew attention “to the inequity of the proposal,” and appealed for united action in protesting against the proposed legislation. The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) said it was clear some united action was necessary by local bodies, because the scheme was going to act unfairly to Taranaki, where the local bodies had their roads in very good order. Mr. Wilson mentioned that the question was going to be discussed by a meeting of Taranaki local bodies this week, the meeting being called by the Loca] Bodies’ Association. This was an association which the council had not joined and an invitation had come to the council for this meeting, but acceptance of the invitation would necessitate the council joining the association.

It was decided not to attend the conference.
