(From Our Own The ordinary monthly meeting of the Kaponga Town Board was held on Tuesday, the 16th. Present: Councillors Cook (ehairman), Shepherd, Low, Guy, Allen and Betts. The matter of topdressing the park was fully discussed, and it was finally decided to have the work done as soon as possible, and moneys coming from the various clubs will be used in this work. The engineer was granted an increase in wages and travelling expenses of £5O per annum. The members of the Methodist Church have decided to hold a flower show this year. At a meeting held at Mr. Hill’s house a committee was formed consisting of: Patron, Mr. R. Gibson; president, Mr. C. Betts; vice-presidents, Rev. Avery and Mr. Davidson; committee. Messrs. R. E. Williams, C. S. Hill, R. G. Cook, Hey, A. Melville, A. J. Mills, Harding, R. A. Low, Kivell, Davies, Fawcett, Pascoe, McClellan, Des Forges, A. E. King, Schwieters, Moss, Wand, G. Hollard, Hoddinott, J. Guy, with power to add. The schedule was carefully revised, with the exception of one or two sections, which are to be gone through with the ladies at a meeting to be called at an early date. Mr. G. Cook was appointed secretary and treasurer, and Mr. C. Hill assistant secretary. It is hoped to have the schedule in the printer’s hands very shortly, so that copies will be available for intending exhibitors at an early date. Judging from the interest taken at present the coming show should almost reach the standard of those held here years ago. The juveniles of Kaponga have formed a chess and draughts club and under the/ supervision of the Rev. Avery they are progressing well. Their first match was played with the Awatuna Club, who proved too many for our local boys. However, our boys did not do so badly, as they were only two games behind. The scores were 15 to 13. A return match was to be played on Saturday night. The local school is expecting a visit from the inspector on Tuesday, so the ..children are putting in some hard work to be ready.
