ONE FARTHING DAMAGES.
ACTION AGAINST NEWSPAPER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received August 22, 9.55 p.m. Melbourne, August 22. The action has concluded in which Mr. Willis, secretary of the Australian Coal and Shale Employees’ Federation, claimed £5OOO damages from the Melbourne Argus newspaper for alleged libel published in connection with the stewards’ strike. The article complained of refers to Willis as a wrecker and as an undesirable importation from America. The jury returned a verdict for the Argus on three counts in the action, and a verdict on one count for Willis, with one farthing damages. Decision on the question of costs was reserved.
