INGLEWOOD.

BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) August 19. The Inglewood Beautifying and Improvement Society had its first field day on Thursday. A decidedly propitious start was made, which augurs well for the future fortunes of the society. The weather was all that could be wished and there was a good muster of willing workers, whose efforts were encouraged when the scene of their labors was graced by the presence of ladies, who besides giving encouragement and applauding results provided refreshments that so in-, vigorated the toilers that some- of them could hardly be torn from their selfimposed tasks, even at the going down of the sun. The ladies present, to whom many thanks are due, were Mesdames J. Burnip, H. Drake, W. J. Smith and L. and J. Sutherland; while the workers included Messrs. J. R. Sutherland (president), W. J. Smith (secretary), I. Burnip, T. and H. Drake, W. H. Eagar, E. Maetzig and Rj Stevens. Scouts Messenger and Sutherland, of the Inglewood troop, are specially deserving of mention, for they worked like young trojans, intelligently and well. Other scouts, too, joined them when school was out. Master Roy Eagar must not be forgotten; he came to see all well and was as interested as any of the crowd. Taken altogether a very satis--factory start was made towards carrying out Mr. W. W. Smith’s recommendations. A pleasant out-of-doors afternoon was spent in doing what is hoped will prove to be for the good of the community, and good exercise and fellowship was enjoyed by all. As to the results, let those who laugh at amateur efforts go and see for themselves, and then hurry back to Mr. Smith, the treasurer, and pay that 5s sub.

GENERAL ITEMS. The Inglewood Volunteer Fire Brigade’s socic. on Thursday night could not have fallen on a better date as far as weather was a factor, and the social was a pronounced success. The hall was well filled with dancers, while card games were to be had by those whose leanings were that way. The M.C.’s (Fireman Crossman and Fireman Lovell) kept things going well, loyally backing up the music supplied by Miss Curd’s full orchestra. That they gave satisfaction is sufficiently proved by the fact that 2 a.m. was reached, or near it, before a final halt was called. Visitors to this favorite annual event came from far and near, fireman from the brigades of Hawera. Kaponga and Waitara amongst them. The sumptuous supper supplied by Messrs. Lealand Bros, was patronised by no less than 219 persons and still there was a good reidue when appetites were sated. It is to be hoped the brigade will benefit substantially by the evening’s takings. On Wednesday a party of 22 members of Moturoa Druids’ Lodge came by motdrs to Inglewood as visitors to the Inglewood Lodge. where, after the formal business of the night was disposed of, they were entertained at card games. Euchre and eribbage each had its votaries and lodge played against lodge. In the end they came out level, for though the visitors bested their hosts at euchre, those hosts turned the tables on them at crib, curiously enough, by exactly the same points. Supper, with speeches of the kind all good Druids arc acquainted with, followed, and then farewells with wishes for a pleasant trip in the splendid moonlight and hopes for another similar meeting on some future occasion ended a really social, friendly gathering, more of which would do good to the community at large.
