Splendid entries have been received for the Hunt Club meetings to be held in Taranaki during the . next few weeks, many owners of first-class horses taking the opportunity of giving their charges a proper winding-up before tackling the big spring meetings. There will be no racing this week, but on Wednesday next the Dannevirke Hunt Club meeting promises good sport. At first glance. Tornea, Tigerlaud. Regard, Bonny Briar, and Makere look to have bright prospects at the gathering. . Coolpan has changed hands again, Mr. J. McDonnell having disposed of the son of Cooltrim at a good figure. Coolpan will carry the colors of Mr. Isaac Jefferson (Marton), at Dannevirke next week. By By, by Hymettus—Taipoa, died last week at her owner’s place in Bulls. She was the dam of Honey Bee, Marqueteur, Hurry On, Celmisifi, Mark Time, Honeymoon, and Anticipate, and at the time of her death was m fo;’.l to Elysian. She cost Mr. J. P. Galsford 45 guineas, and produced four foals mentioned Inst above—while owned by him, so w.'-! a cheap proposition. Gladful han now won the three bigrest

hurdle faces in the Dominion, namely the Grand National Hurdles, Great Northern Hurdles, and Winter Hurdles (Trentham). Be !s a wonderfully preserved old clap, being now in his eleventh year.

A fortunate youth in Bulls drew David in Tatt’s No. 1 sweep on the August Handicap. David ran third, and so £B6O comes ro New Zealand. Needless to say Bulls had a severe headache tho morning after the news came through.

The meeting between Fire Eater and Tigerland in the Aylesbury Steeples on Saturday created considerable interest, but the former finished up favorite on the mactiry*. Fire Eater was going easily In front at the end of a mile when he fell, leaving Tigerland to win easily from John Bunny. If Tigerland is sent to Dannevirke he should win with any weight. Dainty Step cost punters a lot of money at Riccarton, and on her form on the second and third days could not have had a ghost of a chance in tho Winter Cup.

Pl:it May was a very unlucky horse in the Styx Hurdles. Starting second favorite, he led by many lengths to the last fence, where he toppled over. He had only to stahd up to win, and must be a good sort of a horse. His last five starts at the end of last season resulted in two seconds, two firsts and a third.

With Coroglen scratched, and Waimai riderless at the first jump, tho Lincoln Steepler chase was a very soft, thing for Sturdee, who won in hollow fashion, and paid a fair price. San Sebastian broke down In the race. Stardec’s success was only one of three credited to Masterton-owned horses on Saturday, otner winners from the more or less "dry” district being Master Boris and Prince Martian. Explorer sprung a surprise in tho Sydenham Hurdles, practically winning from end to end, and returning’ a remunerative dividend. A number of Wanganui sports were on him, but. more went for Muitire, Sir Fanciful and Gladful.

Since Mr. Lovell Nicholls purchased Explorer the imported horse has more than paid his way. He won the Tiritea Hurdles at the Manawaiu summer meeting, finished second to Kipling in the Okalawa Hurdles at Hawera, won the Farewell Hurdles at Wanganui, and finally the Sydenham Hurdles nt Riccarton. N. K. McDonell has ridden him In his recent races.

Rumoured that Mr. I?ric Riddiford intends giving Coalition a chance to distinguish (or extinguish) himself in the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase. If the horse goes Home McSweency will probably accompany him to do the riding.
