NEWSPAPER LIBEL ACTION. Melbourne, August 15. An action has been commenced in which Willis, secretary of the Australian Coal-shale Employees’ Federation, is claiming £5OOO damages for alleged libel from the Argus newspaper. The alleged libel was published in connection with the stewards’ strike and refers to Willis as a wrecker and as an undesirable importation from America. WAGES AND LIVING COSTS. Sydney, August 15. At tly Board of Trade inquiry regarding the cost of living the Australian Mines and Metals Association and the Employers’ Federation applied for a reduction in the living wage to £3 13s Id weekly in view of the decreased cost of living, contending -that if the present wage was maintained it would lead to further unemployment. COCKATOO DOCKYARD SCANDAL. Sydney. August 15. An action lias commenced in which the Federal Government claims £29,662 from Milne Bros., engineers, of this city. The claim alleges this amount was paid to the defendants for goods which were not supplied to the Cockatoo Dockyards. William Milne, a member of the firm, is serving a sentence in connection with frauds at the dockyards.
