Orders for papers may also be left with them. PERSONAL. August 15. A marriage of local interest, was quietly celebrated this morning between Mr. Jack Dodd, of Stratford, and Miss E. Davis, late of Waipuku. The many friends of Mr. Dodd will be pleased to hear that he is recovering from his serious illness, and left hospital a few days ago, after a long spell there. All will join in wishing him a speedy recovery and every happiness. SHOW DATE FIXED. The committee of the Stratford Agricultural and Pastoral Association met last night and fixed the dates of this year’s show as November 23 and 24. It was decided to pull down the present pig pens and erect new ones, and a working bee will start operations on Thursday. GENERAL. A lecture was delivered at the Stratford School on Saturday afternoon by the senior inspector of schools for Taranaki, on the subject of “How to Teach English”. Over a hundred teachers from all parts of Taranaki were present, and the lecture was listened to with the greatest interest. The lecturer confined his remarks to voice culture and purity of speech in the infant classes, the two foundations upon which the young students’ knowledge and. use of English must be built. He pointed out* that the methods of teaching were rapidly changing with increasing knowledge of child psychology, but it was generally agreed that sound work in the training of children when their minds were plastic and impressionable was necessary. A meeting of subscribers to the late T. Roberts Fund will be held in the Municipal Chambers on Wednesday, at 8 p.m., the business being the presentation of accounts.

The Stratford Returned Soldiers’ Association is holding a special general meeting of members at the Municipal Chambers tomorrow evening to consider soldier settlers’ representation on the Land Board, and also general business. The question of representation on. the Land Board is one which should interest all members of the association.

On instruction from the registrar of the Supreme Court, under the Wages Protection and Contractors’ Liens Act, a property on the Opunake Road was put up for auction at the Farmers’ Co-op. rooms this afternoon. Only one bid (£1500) was received, and the property was passed in. Mr. T. I. Lamason, in another column, draws attention to his remarkable exhibition of carpet rugs and runners, which are to be sold almost regardless of price from Thursday next, at his mart in Stratford. This display will be something unique in local experience, and will afford an opportunity for all to select the choicest of home comforts.

The Stratford Assembly dance, which was arranged for August 19, has been postponed until September 2. In ihe report of the Stratford Musical Society’? concert the name of the honorary librarian, whose good work was referred to after the performance, was printed as D. Lester instead of D. McAllister.
