RANGITIKEI RACING CLUB. A FURTHER PROTEST. The Rangitikei Racing Club has for the past 1 sixty five years upheld the best traditions of sport in the Rangitikei district, and has supplied clean, first class racing for many thousands of country folk in Bulls, Sanson, and the surrounding districts. As showing the popularity of the club’s gatherings ,it may be mentioned that at the last annual meeting about 4500 persons paid for admission. The central position of the club's fine course enables the Rangitikei Racing Club to cater for thousands of farming people who would never otherwise enjoy even an annual day’s sport, and it is not surprising therefore that intense indignation has been stirred up in Rangitikei, by the recommendation of the Racing Commission that this and other country clubs should be deprived of their annual meetings in order to grant additional permits to larger clubs which are already surfeited with racing. The Press of the Dominion has lent a sympathetic ear to the just protests of the i little country clubs, and it is quite certain that when Parliament meets, the farcical findings of the Racing Commission will be promptly vetoed. Nevertheless the Rangitikei Racing Club lias been actively engaged marshalling its forces, and at the forthcoming meeting of the club's members a monster petition will be prepared for presentation to Parliament.
The club’s supporters have included the leading horse breeders, horse owners, hunting and polo enthusiasts in the Rangitikei district, and the facilities of racing at. home, aud the splendid training tracks provided by the Rangitikei Racing Club have been a big faptor in promoting the sport in the district. During the past, twenty-four years, the Rangitikei Racing Club has contributed £18,815 to the New Zealand Government in totalisator tax alone, of which £12,473 has been paid in the last six years, showing the progress the club has made in the recent years. The New Zealand owner. Mr. W. R. Kcmball, of Maslcrton, does not go in for racing in half-hearted fashion. At present he has 25 horses in training, W. Hawthorne being in charge of the principal fiat-racers and tho jumpers, while B. Burgess has tho remainder. The crack French steeplechaser, Heros XI., was defeateil in May in a minor steeplechase for which he was favorite, and many French' racegoers had an idea he should have done belter. A week later a race of £2OOO was to be run at Enghien, and the two races circulars were, issued inciting racegoers to violent action. In consequence, the Soeleto Sportive d'Encourageinent made special arrangements for a large body of police to he on the course at Enghien to prevent rioting, in the event of Heros XI. winning. Trouble was averted, as that horse could only get third, but It is certain there would have been an explosion if, te had won.
