[JEW PLYMOUTH GAS CO.
THE ANNUAL REPORT. The forty-third anriual report of the New Plymouth Gas Company, Ltd., states:— “Shareholders on reviewing the position will ascertain that the operations covering this period have been beset with difficulties and drawbacks, and the results are not equal to those attained in the preceding year. The usual interim dividend was not paid owing to the necessity of providing for unexpected contingencies should they arise. This decision on their part proved a wise one, for the company had to meet heavy additional charges when the supplies of coal from the usual sources failed, necessitating the purchase of small quantities of a variable quality elsewhere at an enhanced price. The heavy unavoidable increase in working expenditure, together with the burden of increased charges for coal, have, In a measure, contributed to the small profits in relation to receipts. An index of the company’s business may be found in the essential fact of the increased demand for gas connections, and it is reassuring to note that many new consumers have been added during the year. We were compelled twice to advance the price of /as during the last twelve months to meet the increased cost of production brought about chiefly by the persistent and general soaring of prices, which set our most careful estimates at defiance. After providing for expenses of management, cost of coal, bad debts, and Interest on debenture capital to July 1, 1921, the profits for the year (Including the balance brought forward from the previous year) amount to £lB4O 13s 2d, which the directors propose to allocate as follows: In payment of a dividend which will absorb £925, bringing the total dividend for the year up to 5s per share in the first issue (fully paid up) 4s per share on the second Issue (£4 paid up) and 3d per share on the third issue (5s paid), leaving to be carried forward £921 13s 2d. The retiring directors are Messrs. T. Furlong and M. Healey, who are 1 eligible and offer themselves for reelection. |A director will have to be elected in place of Mr. E. P. Webster, who resigned during the year. An auditor will have to be appointed by the meeting In place of Mr. J. S. S. Medley, who is elio-ible ’**’•* re-aonoint-aie K t.
