THE DAVIS CUP.

AUSTRALASIA v. DENMARK. WIN FOR AUSTRALASIA. THREE STRAIGHT MATCHES. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. New York, August 12. ? Davis Cup matches have commenced at Cleveland between Australasia and Denmark. Peach (AustTfdfwia) defeated Tenger (Denmark), 7—5, 6 —2, 6—4. Anderson (Australasia) defeated In-; gersley (Denmark), G—o, G—l, 6—5. j Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Received August 13. 5.5 p.m. New York, August 12. ■ At Cleveland the first match showed. that Peach was the superior court craftsman and his placement was superior Tegner’a ground strokes were very poor, Peach playing a back court game throughout the match. The first set started out as a battle of services, but the Australian finally broke through. Tegner tired in the next set and Peach had an easy time. The Dane staged a’ brief recovery in the last set, but Peach’s back court and placement work was too much for him. Anderson was too fast for Ingersley in the second match and youth conquered. Anderson out-stroked and outplaced the veteran Dane, whose footwork was extremely slow. Ingersley’s recovery in the last set was he won five games before Anderson recovered and won. Received August 14, 5.5 p.m. New York, August' 13. At Cleveland, Anderson and Tod<T (Australasia) defeated Tegner and Hendrickson (Denmark), 6—3, 5—3, 6—2. The Danes were hardly the equals of. the Australasians. The losers alsoworked under the disadvantage of never having played on grass courts and therefore they constantly misjudged shots and were unable to accommodate themselves to the easy bouncing balls, and in attempting to leurn the run of the turf they bounded the balls into the net. The Australasians’ win promotes them, into the final, as they will meet the winners of the India and Japan match at Newport on August 25,26 and 27. The Japanese are expected to win, in which, case the Australasians’ task at Newport will not be an easy one. AMERICA’S TEAM. SAME AS LAST YEAR. Received August 14. 5.5 p.m. New York, August 13. Tilden, Johnston, Williams and Washburn have been chosen to represent £ha; United States in the challenge round of the Davis Cup.
