HELD FROM THE ALLIES WORK THROUGH THE LEAGUE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. Received August 14, 5.5 p.m. Paris, August 13. The Supreme Council discussed the appointment of an international committee to deal with the Russian famine. The Italian, Japanese and American representatives had reason to believe that the Soviet would object to organised control, in default of which the delegates feared assistance would be inoperative. Lord Curaon said it was Britain’s opinion that assistance should be given to the bonier States to carry out protective measures. Last year the League of Nations secured contributions to combat the spread of disease. This fund was exhausted, and the Council agreed to ask the contributory Powers to continue subscriptions.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. SOVIET NOT ALARMED AT TREK OF FAMISHED. London. August 12. A message from Riga statr* that local representatives of the Soviet assured Latvia that it had nothing to fear from an invasion of famine-stricken Russians as the people were fleeing toward* Si beria and the south-west provinces o'.
