NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Wire.—Special to News.) Christchurch, Saturday. The weather was warm for the conclusion of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National meeting. ’Pho attendance did not include so many visitors as earlier in the week, but the gaps were filled in by local sportsmen, some of them havirig their first day’s racing for the week. The totalisator investments for the meeting were. £207,324, compared with £213,475 last year. The seven acceptors took part In the Longbeach Hunters’ Hurdles. Pamplona and Ready, who led the field home on the flrat day. were the popular picks, but both ran badly. Rod Blaze was always handy, and he won comfortably by a length from Likelihood, who beat Birkenvale by half a length. The winner was (he outsider of the field. There were only four starters for the Aylesbury Steeplechase. Interest centred in rhe meeting of Fire Eater and Tigerland, the last of whom had won a race earlier In the week. Fire Eater led for half the journey, and then hit Cutts* fence hard, losing his rider. From this on ligerland was always going well, and he won easily from John Bunny, with Joffre close up. Tigerland is a promising sort for big events next winter. There were ten starters for the Heathcote Handicap. Caverock and Link Up led to the distance, where Link Up was done with, and Prince Martian heat Caverock comfortably by half a length. Hlero was a fair third—a good performance after meeting trouble at the turn. He will win soon. Dainty Step was outpaced at the Start, being last into the straight, but she finished just behind the third horse.
A field of ten took part In the Styx Hurdles. .Phil May set out to make a runaway race. He still had a lead of several lengths at the last hurdle, where he fell. Master Boris then drew away from Tigritiya, while Te Oro was a fair third. Silverlea, a wild brute, ran off at the first hurdle, and Indus fell six furlongs from home. Te Oro night have won but for blundering over Phil May when the latter fell. Hyttus was withdrawn from the Sydenham Hurdles, leaving ten starters. The Kcmball bracket. Gladful anil Mill o' Cowrie, was a little better backed than Kauri King, Sir Fanciful and Demagogue. It was a poor race, as Explorer took charge at the start and led all the way, winning easily. Demagogue tired over the last furlong, and Multlve took second place from the fast-finishing Sir Fanciful. Mr. Kemball’s pair finished together in the rear with Kauri King just In front of them. Explorer’s only other start at the meeting was in a flat race on the first day.
The scratching of Coroglen left a poor field of five for the Lincoln Steeplechase. First Line, Walmai and Sturdee weje evenly backed. Walmai lost his rider at the first fence. Sturdee was in front at the .end of half a mile, and won an interesting race by ten lengths from First Line, with Manawapango a hundred yards away. San Sebastian went a round and was pulled up lame.
In the field of eleven hacks who contested the Redcliii’s Handicap Royal Mac was much liked, though Treao, Cantoris and Corn Rigs were also backed. Corn Rigs was in charge early, and won easily by a length. The Reaver finished fast and just cut Cantoris out of second money, with Lady Lucullus next. Royal Mac and Treso were prominent at the entrance to the /straight, and then collapsed. The meeting was brought to a close with the Selwyn Handicap. It was a great betting race, with a lot of money for Mustard Pot, Weldone, Will Oakland, Fabrinade and Miss‘ Muriel. A hot pace Was set by Fabrinade and Klllowen, but they ran themselves out at the distance, where Weldone ran past. He, in turn, was challenged by Mustard Pot, who won handsomely by over a length. Miss Muriel finished fast, and was third, and then came Klllowen and Fabrinade. I never saw Will Oakland, who was evidently knocked out by his hard race on the Thursday. The performance of Mustard Pot stamped him as a horse of good RACING IN AUSTRALIA. THE VICTORIAN STEEPLECHASE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received August 14, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, August 14.
