TURF TOPICS.' (By “Moturoa.") Concluding day at Riccarton. Kauri King’s turn is not far off. Mustard Pot returned a false price on Thursday. Coroglen was backed down below evens in the Beaufort. Steeples, and won easily. Two much boomed northerners, Pine Arch and Cantoris, duly landed on Thursday. Horses for courses I The Winter Cup fyluner, Clean Swe.op, won four races last

season, and three of them were at Riccarton. The Grand National “treble" did not look

easy to _pick, yet I heard of one layer who was strack for £lOO to “five bob!” Coalition must be “protected." Coroglen, Slurdee and Waimai looked to have him beaten in the. Great Northern, Wellington and Grand National Steeples respectively, yet they fell and made the way easy for the fortunate

son of Patronus. Heathersprig, again finished up in second place in the Winter Cup, history repeating itself. According to detailed accounts of the race Heathersprig was unfortunate at the start, and did well to run through as he Old. On 1 this form he Is worth following. The disappointing Demagogue managed to win the Jumpers' Flat Race on 6 Tuesday, and

there was a run on him for the Grand National Hurdles in consequence—much to the benefit of the Bar Vons. Demagogue was saddled up on eighteen occasions last season, but tho only win recorded was in a minor event at the Wairoa meeting. Fire Eater, who made no race of the Enfield Stee'oles at Riccarton, is an aged chestnut gelding by Rorke’s Drift out of a Sou’wester mare. This made his fourth consecutive win in six weeks.

So far the Grand National meeting has been in favor of the punters. Coalition's victory must have hit the ring heavily, coupled with that of Gladful, while Penury Rose, Corcg’cn and Mustard Pot added further to the bookmakers’ disasters. The public was particularly hot on the scent of winners on the second day of the meeting.

Scrimmage was sent out favorite in the Avonhead Handicap on Tuesday, and for once the aptly named daughter of Antagonist and Mad Whirl ran up to track form, and strongly ridden by Harold Young, just got home from Cantoris and Mirza. In the absence of Onslaught’s sister the form of Cantoris 'and Mirza w'orke’d out well on tho second day. One of the best backed runners in the Winter Cup was the imported horse Callaghan. His track fonm had been of a brilliant order, but it was asking him a stiff question to win such a race first time up. However, he shaped well enough: for sfx furlongs or so to suggest 7 that he will win a good race when he becomes acclimatised in New Zealand.

A contemporary is responsible for the statement that Coalition Is the only horse that has won the Grand National twice. This is, of course, absolutely incorrect. Agent won the race three times, and Mutiny won on two occasions. A short while ago Penury Rose could have been bought for 500 guineas. Since then he has won three races and finished second once —all in half a dozen starts. Incidentally Penury Rose won £665 in stakes, and re turned several “healthy” dividends.

Gladful scored a faultless, clear-cut victory in the Grand National Hurdles. His wonderful staying abilities were brought otic ny tho solid pace set his stablemato, MUI o’ Gowrie, which cracked up the opposition and paved the way for the Birkenhead geldings triumph. Gladful faded out of the limelight in the earlier part of last season, the of-,

forts to convert him into a steeplechaser being a failure. Consequently ho was allowed to pay a fair price in this year’s Grand National, though his form at Trentham last month should have y»it punters wise to his Riccarton prospects. Bothi on the couerse and away from it there was big money for Dainty Step on Thursday, but after racing the favorite, Pine Arch, to the half-distance, she fell away quickly, and was very tired when the post was reached. Over a shorter course the daughter of Lucullus is always dangerous. Harold Young, who won on Scrimmage at Riccarton, only arrived back from Sydney on the day of the races. His brother, George, is not getting many chances in 'Stralla, but will become better known vyhen R. J. Mason’s team are saddled up for their spring engagements. Sir Fanciful not considered up to Grand National form, bub there was a deal of imerit in the manner in which he outclassed strong opposition in the Spreydon Hurdles on Thursday. Tigritiya, Te Oro and Penury Rose were always prominent, and the first named looked a winner when she landed over the last fence in front. Sir Fanciful,

strongly ridden, beat her home after a good set-to.

Another defeat went down to the discreair irt Callagtan on Thursday, but the luck was against him in the August Handicap. Mustard Pot won nicely at the right end, and the dividend knocked everyone a twister I

Tho Bulletin piciutres a birdcage after a race, the horses being unsaddled. Pointing to his horse, a disappointed owner remarks, “Blowing, ain't he?" “Yes," replied the trainer bitterly, “but. he's got nothing much to blow about. The blanker finished larst I” Mr. J. Williamson, wire has returned to Auckland, reports that Loyal Irish has improved odt of all knowledge, and will be a runner in the A.J.C. Derby. The climate evidently agrees with the Absurd colt, and he would fetch a nice,,price if sold on the otter side. During the past few weeks 11. McSweeney has had a royal Innings. Besides his trio of big wins on Coalition, he won the Winter Hurdles on Alteration.

Tigerland fulfilled all tte good things bhiil of him by winning the Hunt Club Cup vef.v easily on Thursday, bur. the dividend be paid hardly recouped backers for his failure on the first day.

Coroglen’s victory in the Beaufort Steeples was made easier by First Line losing his rider,''but nothing really had a chance with the Aucklander, who won as he liked. Next season l e will stay better than he does at present, and should be capable of winning the best steeplechases in the Dominion.
