The conditions were ideal to-day for the opening of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting. A good deal of rain had fallen since Friday, but the course had dried up well and the sun was shining brightly to-day. The attendance did not look as largo as usual, and there was a drop in the totalisator figures. There was some fine racing. The - Grand National Steeplechase- provided one of the best contests in its history. A start was made with the Tally-Ho Steeplechase for maiden hunters. There is some-, thing wrong with the conditions, as the race I has frequently been a failure. To-day it drew only three compel Itors, and after Petitesse had made most of the running. Morning Glow outstayed her and won comfortably. They both jumped well, and so’ did Likelihood, except for baulking at Cults’ fence. He afterwards got round all right, and but. for the mishap might have won. Sir Fanciful and Penury Rose were fancied for the Trial Hurdles. The former went out early, falling at the second hurdle. Ho' is becoming expensive. Te Oro was always one of the leaders. Pariform went with him for six furlongs, and then gave place io Master Boris. On reaching the straight Penury Rose shot up and he won decisively. It was an attractive performance. Tigrltiya jumped nadiy. The seven in the Hunters' Hurdles were not a good lot. Birkenvalo and Grange were fancied. The. former accompanied Pamplona to the front for nearly a mile, and then faded out. Ready and Pamplona fought a great finish over the last two furlongs. Ready just winning. He is useful, and will win again aunong the moderates in the south during the spring. Pamplona is a half brother to’ Lochella, and is a good sort. There was a good field of thirteen for tne Jumpers’ Flat Handicap, nine of them being Grand National hurdlers. Dribble, Demagogue and Kauri King were fancied. Demagogue shot out at the entrance to the straight and won nicely from Multive and Kauri King, both of whom finished well. If he can jump Demagogue will be hard to beat on Thurs-
day, but Multivc’s form impressed me more favorably. Hyttus was one of the pace-mak-ers for a. mile, when he faded out, while Gladful and Fisher also failed at the end. The Grand National Steeples attracted thirteen starters. Gay Boy-fell at. the first fence, bringing Master Hamilton down, but the rest of the field jumped all the obstacles. It was a great race all the way. Coroglen and Waimai alternated the lead, but Coalition, £>turdee, Master Strowan, and Luke were In close attendance for the first half. Then Luke commenced to go back. First Line taking his place. There was not a great deal between these six at the sod wall five furlongs from home, Coroglen, Waimai and Coalition being together at the head of the bunch. Racing for the next fence Coroglen dropped back a little. Waimai led Coalition over this and also over the last obstacle, which he ran down badly. He got over, hut slipped on landing and fell. It was hard luck, as he seemed to have had the race in band. Coalition then went on to win comfortably from Coroglen, with First Line finishing well in third place. Then caiine Master Strowan and Sturdee, both of whom were stopping a bit at the end. Coroglen ran a good race, jumping safely, though not as fast as some of his-more experienced rivals. The win of Coalition was full of merit and the public was not slow to recognise this. He was always one of the front division, and , though he was being kicked up to his task five furlongs from home, he finished on strongly. Fire Eater was fancied for the Enfield Steeples, and he won easily. • after being in front practically all the way. John Bunny finished fast to beat Tigerland, who should improve during the meeting. Fire Eater has won four races on end in a few weeks, and he is not done with yet. Pokanekane fell at the first fence and broke his neck. The Winter Cup was a good race most of the way, but Clean Sweep shot out at the distance and won decisively from Heathersprig and Royal Star, both of whom began slowly. Pine Arch was another who came from a long way back. Killowen and Fabrinade made the early pace, with Callaghan and Some Kid handy, but all four stopped badly at the straight. No excuse was possible for Callaghan, who is not a racehorse. Vagabond and Onslaught were the last pair to finish. Kareao did not get out, smarrry and ,ii»v«r tt-a front* '
In the Avonhead Handicap Scrimmage was solidly backed and she duly landed, after being one of the leaders all the way. She is a sister to Onslaught, and rather useful. Cantoris was finishing well in second place, just beating Mirza, another decent sort. Treso was backed, but ran badly. METROPOLITAN TROTS. SECOND DAY’S ACCEPTANCES. Christchurch, August 9. Even the weights could come out the same day and the acceptances close in the evening. Race No. 2 would be better No. 8, and vice versa, so as a sprinter could start in both if wanted.- I am, etc., OWNER. New Plymouth, August 9, 1921.
